Check out our review of Berghaus tents for family camping. All are very large, multi-room shelters that can be used year-round.

The name of the Berghaus brand sounds German, and the meaning is ‘mountain house’, but this is an UK-based brand. It was established in 1966 in a small shop called the LD Mountain Centre in Newcastle UK, by Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison.

They started selling gear of other brands but they soon had their own product, the Berghaus rucsac – the Berg 172, followed by Cyclops rucsac. They claim these were the world’s first backpacks with an internal frame.

A curious detail about Berghaus tents is that the brand does not sell them although they have an outdoors site. So you will find them at various sellers in the UK and perhaps sometimes even on Amazon-US. If you go to Blacks you will finds lots of equipment from Berghaus, including tents in a variety of sizes and shapes. The focus of this text is on large family camping tents only.

My list of the best Berghaus tents

The tents in the list below are ordered by the floor area, from smaller to larger, but wait to see how big they are and you will realize there are no small tents here.

The list is short and I have tried to include tents that have something specific, although they share a number of the same features. I might add a few more tents here later, so this is why you might want to bookmark this text and check it occasionally.

I hope you will love the products I present below, I choose only the best that is on the market, those that I can fully recommend, and present them here in the site. Just a heads up that as an associate of Amazon and other sellers, I may earn some commission from qualifying purchases of products bought via links on this page, at no additional cost for you.

1. Berghaus Air 6 Tent

Berghaus Air 6 Tent.
Berghaus Air 6 Tent.

This is a tunnel-shaped tent supported by air beams, very easy to use and to pitch. A two-way stirrup pump with a gauge is included, and the beams are with quick-release air valves, spring-loaded for fast deflation.

You have an external shell, fully sealed and with a sewn-in floor, and inside of it there are two inner tents at the two ends, each with their own additional floors and with two doors. There is place for 3 people in each of the inner tents, but several more can sleep in the central living room.

The waterproof rating is huge 6000 mm but this is quite a standard number for this brand. The tent is designed for the British weather and you have a full protection here.

There are plenty of ventilation options, you have numerous low and high vents, some of them are visible in the picture. Two external doors are both double-layer with full size zippered mesh plus zippered panels.

The tent is heavy, it weighs 58.4 lb (26.5 kg), but the carry bag has wheels so it is not so problematic to move it short distances. The packed size is 33.9 x 18,9 x 18.9 inches (86 x 48 x 48 cm). The overall dimensions are 287.4 x 98.4 inches (730 x 250 cm), and the peak height is impressive 84.6 inches (215 cm).

They do not provide the number for the area, the tent is not strictly rectangular. My estimate is that it has probably around 188 ft² (17.5 m²) or so.

What I like:

  • Rooms.
  • Protection.
  • Solid windows.
  • Ventilation.

What I dislike:

  • The weight.

2. Berghaus Air 4XL 4 Person Family Tent

This Berghaus Air 4XL is officially for 4 people only, but it offers 168 ft² (15.6 m²) of the inner area. There is also a porch visible in the picture with its semi-protected 33 ft² (3.1 m²). So this is an incredibly luxurious option for family camping and the tent can easily accommodate 4 people extra.

The structure is with an inner tent within the shell, it has a divider, and you also have a huge living room. So the tent is formally a 3-room configuration. It is supported by air beams, so it is easy to set it up, one person can do the job in 10 minutes or so.

There are 3 external doors and the windows visible in the picture are solid. The fabric is a polyester with a waterproof rating of 6000 mm. The materials are tested to the European EN 5912 safety standard.

Here are a few more numbers. The weight is 62.4 lb (28.3 kg), the peak height is 84.6 inches (215 cm), and the packed size is 33.5 x 22.8 x 19.3 inches (85 x 58 x 49 cm).

What I like:

  • Great storage spaces.
  • Ventilation.
  • Comfort & area.

What I dislike:

  • The weight.
  • The price.

3. Berghaus Air 6XL Polycotton Tent

Berghaus Air 6XL Polycotton Tent.
Berghaus Air 6XL Polycotton Tent.

As the name of this tent suggests, it is constructed from a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, and this usually described as polycotton. Such materials incorporate both good and bad features of its components. So this tent is both heavy and bulky, the weight is 108.5 lb (49.2 kg). But it comes with a robust wheeled carry bag with adjustable buckles.

Overall dimensions are 238 x 177 inches (605 x 450 cm), and the inner floored area is around 244 ft² (22.7 m²). You have an inner tent within the shell tent. The inner tent includes 3 separate rooms, and you have a huge living room in front of it under the shell tent.

The living room alone is around 129 ft² (12 m²) and it can accommodate 6 people more if necessary. There is also a large porch visible in the picture, with additional covered 48 ft² (4.5 m²).

The tent is supported by 5 long high performance TPU air beams featuring spring loaded, quick release air valves, and it comes with a 2-way double efficiency stirrup pump with a gauge. The tent is with a 86.6 inches (220 cm) peak height.

Ventilation is excellent, there are three large doors with full size zippered mesh plus zippered panels. But there are many vents on the long sides and on the rear side behind the inner tent. Note that fly sheet, inner tent and groundsheet are fully fire retardant and tested to the European EN 5912 safety standard. This tent is also in my list of best polycotton family tents.

What I like:

  • Quality materials.
  • Huge rooms.
  • Ventilation.
  • Height.
  • Windows.

What I dislike:

  • The price.

Final thoughts

So this was my selection of Berghaus tents, and you realize that they are all incredibly large, multi-room, and comfortable. It is very typical for Berghaus tents to have plenty of storage options, and this is what you have in all the tents presented here.

They come with inflatable beams instead of classic poles, and you always have a manual pump included in the package. So, in spite of their size, one person can easily pitch any of these Berghaus inflatable tents in 10 minutes or so.

The tents may look heavy and bulky, but it is best to check their area/weight ratio because these are really large tents. They are built for comfort and for car camping, and they have wheeled carry bags that helps when you have to move them short distances.
