My list of best double sleeping pads

So here is my list, the pads are ordered alphabetically:

This list is composed with a focus on versatility, so you have a variety of options regarding the weight, thickness, width, R-value, insulation, and price. Note that I have a separate text with ultralight insulated sleeping pads for backpacking.

1. ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Air Bed

Here you have an inflatable sleeping pad for two people, and with its incredible thickness of 6 inches (15 cm) it is almost without a match on the market. So if you are a side sleeper or just want to have the best comfort and cushion in the tent, this is a pad to consider.

What you cannot completely realize and see from the outside is its coil structure that is supportive and makes the pad stable. It is constructed of durable yet lightweight and completely PVC-free fabric. The pad comes with an innovative pump that operates plugged into a power source (wall or car outlet) or with its internal rechargeable battery. In view of the pad’s thickness this is a tool you need, and the pump indeed quickly inflates/deflates the pad.

Note that the pad is built in two sizes, the queen size, and the twin size, and the former is with the dimensions 80 x 56 inches (203 x 142 cm). It weighs 4 lb 12 oz (2.15 kg). You have a convenient carry bag included.

2. Exped AirMat HL Duo Inflatable Sleeping Pad

This is an inflatable sleeping pad that they build in two sizes M and LW, both are light enough to be carried on the trail. The M size weighs only 1.54 lb (700 g), so if you want something really light to use together with your partner, look no further. The dimensions of the M version are 72 x 41.3/32.3 inches (183 x 105/82 cm), so you realize that the pad is trimmed in the feet area and it is generally quite narrow.

The pad is 2.76 inches (7 cm) thick. I see it also as a great solo pad for people who want to have space to sprawl, it is definitely light enough to be used on the trail even as a solo pad. I have included it also in my list of double-wide backpacking sleeping pads for two people.

The mentioned weight is partly due to its thin materials, so the top and bottom are a 20D polyester with a TPU polyether film laminate, hydrolysis resistant, and Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The temperature rating is 46 °F (8 °C), or in terms of R-value, this is around 1.3. The rating is official ASTM F3340-18.

The packed size is simply impressive (L x D) 7.9 x 4.7 inches (20 x 12 cm), so you can transport this pad in every possible way. Equally impressive is the 5-year warranty which you have with this pad.

3. Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Insulated Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad

The number 10 in the name of this pad is its thickness in centimeters, and this is 3.9 inches. So inside you have an open-cell PU foam Oekotex 100 certified. The pad will self-inflate, simply unfold the pad and open the valves. But if this is not enough there is a mini-pump included in the package.

The foam insulates you properly, or it is better to say this is due to the air trapped in the foam. In any case, you have an R-value of 9.5 and this is roughly equivalent to extreme temperatures of -54 °F (-48 °C).

The dimensions are really good, you have 77.6 x 52 inches (197 x 132 cm) but this all is reflected in the weight which is substantial, the pad weighs 163.3 oz (4.63 kg). To continue with numbers, the packed size is 27.6 x 11.8 inches (70 x 30 cm), so this is a car camping pad built for comfort and protection.

Note that the materials are durable, you have a 50D polyester on the top and 75D on the bottom. They build the pad in two sizes, medium, and long-wide, the numbers given above are for the larger pad. You have a 5-year warranty with this pad.

4. Kelty Tru.Comfort Camp Bed Double-Wide Inflatable Sleeping Pad

Here you have an inflatable pad with its carry bag that doubles as the inflation bag. For this purpose there is an adapter that fits the valve on the pad. This carry bag you simply open, it will fill with air, and then just press it to force the air into the sleeping pad. You repeat this a few times and it will be ready.

This is a large 2-person sleeping pad, the dimensions are impressive 78 x 57 inches (198 x 145 cm) so they did not make it narrow to shed the weight. They were generous also when they made it 4.75 inches (12 cm) thick. So this is an incredibly comfortable camping bed. As you see from the picture, the baffles are transverse, this should reduce the usual bouncing effect.

Now, the weight is not its best feature, it weighs 7 lb 13 oz (3.5 kg), so this is a pad for car camping or for motorbike tours, its packed size is 18 x 10 x 9 inches (46 x 25 x 23 cm). But the weight is justified, the fabric is a durable 75D polyester and there is also a bit of insulation inside, not much really, some 140 grams or so. There should be some R-value but this cannot be a lot, so this is a pad for the warmer part of the year.

5. KingCamp Luxury 3D Double Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad

This KingCamp Luxury 3D Double Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad is with an open-cell foam inside and this is what makes it self-inflating and also insulating. So when you open the valves and unfold the pad, it will suck the air in. These features affect its parameters, so the pad is heavy with its 10.6 lb (4.8 kg) of weight.

But indeed the weight is also due to its great size, its dimensions are 79.1 x 50.3 inches (201 x 128 cm) and the pad is 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick. Note also that the packed size (L x D) is 27.6 x 10.4 inches (70.1 x 26.4 cm).

The foam traps air inside and this insulates you from the ground, the effective R-value is 4.7, so this makes the pad suitable for all seasons. The top fabric is a 30D damp-proof and waterproof, and on the bottom it is far stronger 150D Oxford polyester.

There is a carry bag included, and compression straps. The two valves visible in the picture are used for both inflation and deflation so this is a fast process.

6. Klymit Insulated Double V Pad

Here you have a celebrated design, an inflatable pad with Klymit’s Body Mapping Technology that includes their patented V-shaped baffles visible in the picture above. They use the same design in many of their solo sleeping pads and also in double-wide pads. This design includes also what they call the Side Rails, and they are here to provide a secure and comfortable sleep by centering you on the pad, and at the same time inhibiting air movement when you turn during the sleep.

Yet another important detail here is the Deep Weld patterning that creates expansion zones, and those allow your bag to fully loft beneath you, this is all aimed at an improved thermal comfort. With this, you have an effective R-value of 4.4. In terms of temperatures, this is somewhere in the range of 10 to 5 °F (-12 to -15 °C). So the pad is good enough for almost any weather conditions except for really extreme situations.

They claim that an Anti-Microbial Laminate is used in the production, it permeates the inside laminate in order to inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as fungus and bacteria. As you probably know, those can cause odors and material damage.

The size of this pad is 74 x 47 inches (188 x 119 cm) and it is 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick. But see also the weight which is only 52 oz (1.47 kg) which is quite remarkable for a 2-person sleeping pad with insulation. The packed size is also great (L x D) 12 x 7 inches (30.5 x 17.8 cm).

7. Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Camper Duo Sleeping Pad

This Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Camper Duo Sleeping Pad is again an inflatable pad, and a feature that sets it apart from its competitors is its independent chambers for two users, and you have customized support and a consistent sleeping surface without gaps. This all means that its two halves are inflated independently, so you and your partner can choose how much you want to inflate the pad, and also when you move on your side, your partner is far less disturbed.

The top fabric is a 75D double diamond polyester, and the bottom fabric is a 75D polyester. So these are durable materials, the pad is built in the US and they offer a limited lifetime warranty. Their pads are also covered by their Better Sleep Guarantee, which means that if you are not completely satisfied, you can return it within three months.

The pad is not insulated but it has a thermo-reflective layer that gives it the R-value of 2.2. In terms of temperature, this should be around 36 F (2 C), good enough for 3-season use. The pad weighs 4 lb 2 oz (1.87 kg) and its packed size is great (L x D) 16 x 6.5 inches (38 x 17 cm). So it is very compact and you can transport it on a bicycle. As for the size, it measures 77 x 50 inches (196 x 127 cm) and it is 3 inches (7.6 cm). So this is enough space and cushion for two partners.

How to choose

So this was my list of best double sleeping pads for camping, and I hope you realize how versatile options you have here. There are several parameters and features that are inter-related and affect each other and the pads are very different regarding weight, insulation value, etc. It may be difficult to decide, so here are a few tips that might help.

Purpose

I guess this is the first thing to consider. If you plan to use the pad for camping only and do not plan to carry it anywhere then you have much more freedom. In this case, go for comfort. This means as thick as possible and as large as possible. But if you will carry the pad in the pack or attached to the pack, consider the weight and packed size.

Weight & packed size, plus insulation

These two parameters usually affect each other and they are essential if you will carry the pad on the trail. Note that insulation adds protection, but it also adds weight and bulkiness. In any case, if this is about the trail, go for inflatable pads, and then see if you really need insulation or not.

Insulation

For summer use, you will not need it. Even with air in the sleeping pad, you can have a bit of insulation, this should be in the range of R-value 0.6-0.8. There is a sleeping bag as well, it will not insulate you much when pressed with your body, but everything counts and adds up.

Comfort

This issue can be approached from two points of view. The first is in terms of dimensions, thickness, and support that a pad offers. If you are a side sleeper go for a thicker pad. Also, when you share a pad with your partner, think about the width and also about the option to inflate the two parts separately, this may be very important in the case of a big weight difference between you.

The second aspect is protection from the cold; if the pad does not insulate you from the cold ground, you cannot feel comfortable. So make sure you know what conditions you will have in the camp or on the trail and then decide.
