Here you have a very exclusive collection of the best double sleeping pads for backpacking, all ultralight and reliable products from the best-known brands in this industry.
There may be some good reasons why you would want to carry a double pad on the trail. The space in the pack is limited so you probably would not do this just to have lots of space to sprawl. But this may indeed make sense when you are with your partner in the tent, and above all if you can find an ultralight and ultra-compact double-wide sleeping pad.
This may shed some weight when you count packs of both partners, and this can also be a great option to use the tent’s floor in an optimal way, without unnecessary gaps between two separate pads. There are double-wide pads that are trimmed so that they perfectly fit in a two-person tent with such a trimmed floor profile. You will see some examples below.
Also, when you are with your partner and use some double-wide backpacking sleeping bag, then a double-wide sleeping pad is the best possible choice.
But there may be also some downsides to such an arrangement. For example, bouncing can be annoying when your partner moves on the pad. You do not have this on two separate pads. Also, this may be an issue when partners are of very different weight. Yet another negative side is that different people may like the different firmness of a pad, and when you share it with somebody, you have to make compromises.
My list of best double backpacking sleeping pads
So here is my list, the pads are ordered by weight from heavier to lighter:
This list includes both insulated and uninsulated pads, you may need both types on the trail. Note that even uninsulated pads can provide a bit of insulation. This may happen when you have a clever design that impedes air movement in such a pad. But note that I have a separate text with ultralight insulated sleeping pads for backpacking.
I hope you will love the products I present below, I choose only the best that is on the market, those that I can fully recommend, and present them here in the site. Just a heads up that as an associate of Amazon and other sellers, I may earn some commission from qualifying purchases of products bought via links on this page, at no additional cost for you.
1. Klymit Insulated Double V Pad

When this is about sleeping pads, no list can be without some of the pads from Klymit. So this Klymit Insulated Double V Pad definitely deserves to be here.
Here you have a pad with their celebrated design that includes those V-shaped baffles. This is an inflatable pad with Klymit’s Body Mapping Technology, and this design is used in many of their pads. One particular feature of this design is what they call the Side Rails visible in the picture. They are here to provide a secure and comfortable sleep by centering you on the pad, and at the same time inhibiting air movement when you turn during the sleep.
They use what they call the Deep Weld patterning that creates expansion zones, and those allow your bag to fully loft beneath you, this is all aimed at an improved thermal comfort.
Now, this pad is heavier than others on the list, you have 52 oz (1.47 kg). If you think this is too much, then think again. Bear in mind the size of this pad, this is a rectangular structure that measures 74 x 47 inches (188 x 119 cm), and it is 3 inches (7.6 cm) thick. The packed size is also great (L x D) 12 x 7 inches (30.5 x 17.8 cm).
But this is not all. This is an insulated pad with an effective R-value of 4.4. In terms of temperatures, this is in the range of 10 to 5 °F (-12 to -15 °C). So this is a pad that will protect you from the cold ground in almost any weather conditions.
They claim that an Anti-Microbial Laminate is used in the production, it permeates the inside laminate in order to inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as fungus and bacteria. As you probably know, those can cause odors and material damage.
What I like:
- Packed size.
- Comfort.
- Stuff sack doubles as a pump.
- Durability.
- Price.
What I dislike:
- A bit narrow for two users.
2. Big Agnes SLX Tent Floor Pad

This pad is perfect for tents with a trimmed floor, you realize this from the picture above. They conveniently use the words Floor Pad indicating that it will cover the complete floor, this holds in particular when you use it with some of the tents of this brand.
So the dimensions are 78 x 50/40 inches (198 x 127/102 cm). The pad is 3.5 inches (9 cm) thick so this is true luxury on the trail. But see also its weight which is remarkable, only 43 ounces (1.22 kg). The packed size is 11 x 6 inches (28 x 15 cm).
But here again you have an insulated pad. The insulation is PrimaLoft Silver that works as a heat reflective barrier and it traps body heat and reflects it back. The R-value is 3.2 and this is according to independent ASTM F3340-18 standards. So this is a sleeping pad for 3 seasons, no matter of weather conditions.
The pad is with their original offset I-Beam construction that reduces weight and provides consistent stability and comfort. This is combined with an aviation-grade TPU lamination that provides ultimate weld strength. They use a durable and superlight double rip-stop nylon.
What I like:
- Weight.
- Packed size.
- Insulation.
- Stability & comfort.
What I dislike:
- The price.
3. Klymit Double V Double-Wide Two-Person Sleeping Pad

So you have yet another pad from Klymit here. It is very similar to the one shown above, but note that here you have a pad without insulation. I think it makes sense to add such an option here because you clearly do not always need an insulated pad, so why carrying unnecessary weight.
Let’s see some numbers to see the differences. This pad weighs only 40.5 oz (1.1 kg), and it still has some R-value, it is 1.6. This is good enough for 2 seasons. The dimensions are 74 x 47 inches (188 x 119 cm), and the pad is 3 inches (7.6 cm thick). The packed size is 9 x 5 inches (23 x 12.7 cm). So the pad is both ultra-compact and very light.
This is again the famous V-shaped baffle construction accompanied with shorter horizontal side rails, this is to mitigate air movement and to form a much more stable structure. With such a structure air moves less efficiently in the pad, and this is why it has the mentioned R-value.
You have a very durable 75D polyester. They claim that the inner is with an antimicrobial laminate to inhibit the growth of microorganisms which can cause odors and material damage. There are two Flush Flat Valves. You also get a bonus airbag pump, this is the stuff sack that doubles as an air pump.
What I like:
- Great price.
- Very light.
- Durable.
- Compact.
- Very supportive and comfortable.
- Warranty.
What I dislike:
- Not very wide.
- A bit short.
4. Exped AirMat HL Duo Inflatable Sleeping Pad

Here you have a sleeping pad with classic ordinary longitudinal baffles. They build in two sizes M and LW, and both of them are light and compact enough to be carried on the trail. So the weight and packed size of this pad are everything but ordinary.
The M size weighs only 1.54 lb (700 g), so if you want something really ultralight to use together with your partner, this is it. The dimensions of the M version are 72 x 41.3/32.3 inches (183 x 105/82 cm). As you see, this is again a trimmed pad in the feet area and it is generally quite narrow. I see it also light enough to be used on the trail even as a solo pad. The pad is 2.76 inches (7 cm) thick.
Such a great weight is partly due to its thin materials. The top and bottom are a 20D polyester with a TPU polyether film laminate, hydrolysis resistant, and Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The temperature rating is 46 °F (8 °C), or in terms of R-value, this is around 1.3. Note that the rating is official ASTM F3340-18.
The packed size is impressive (L x D) 7.9 x 4.7 inches (20 x 12 cm), so you can transport this pad in every possible way. Note also the impressive 5-year warranty which you have with this pad. This pad is also in my list of best Exped double sleeping pads.
What I like:
- Weight.
- Packed size.
- Warranty.
What I dislike:
- The width.
- The price.
Final thoughts
So this was my selection of best double sleeping pads for backpacking, all very different, ultralight and ultra-compact. I plan to update it whenever I find something suitable to be added here. This is why you might want to bookmark this site or this text and visit it again. This will keep you informed.
If you are still undecided about choosing your double backpacking sleeping pad, here are a few tips that might help.
The weight
This is about carrying stuff on your back, therefore the weight and packed size are incredibly important. In this sense go for the lightest and the most compact option here in the list. This hold in particular if this is for mild weather adventures, all of them will do the job.
Protection
However, if you expect cold nights or if this is about tours through mountains in general, at high elevations, etc., then you cannot make compromises. Better be prepared than to suffer. So think about the R-value. You have some great options here.
Size
None of these pads is really wide. This is reasonable to expect for such a purpose. But this is about sharing it with your intimate partner so they will do the job. Yet, if you are a tall person, you will want to check the length, there are differences here in the list.
Editor’s Choice
It is always about compromises, but then the point is to choose a pad where you reduce compromises to a minimum, and without sacrificing protection. The pad below is long, but it is not particularly wide. However, it is very thick, and it is very warm and suitable for any weather in 3-season adventures. This is why it is my choice.
