1. Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 Sleeping Bag

Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 Sleeping Bag.
Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 Sleeping Bag.

This Exped MegaSleep Duo 25 Sleeping Bag is incredibly versatile, and one could describe it as a 4-in-1 bag. This is because of the following.

  • It has 2 temperature ratings. This means that the two halves in the picture above are with two different temperature ratings, so you can use one or another as the top layer. As you know, the bottom layer becomes compressed by your body so it does not protect you much. This is where your sleeping pad plays a role.
  • It is designed to be used as a double-wide and also a two solo sleeping bags.

So now you realize that you have at least 4 different combinations, but note also that you can use those two halves as separate blankets as well.

About the rating; one side is with a 42.8 F (6 C) rating, and the other side is 26.6 F (-3 C). So if you use any of the two halves as a solo pad, you will have two different ratings.

As you realize from the picture, this is a rectangular bag without a hood. The fabric is a moderately durable 40D ripstop nylon, Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The liner is 40D nylon and it is also Oeko-Tex 100 certified. The insulation is a 100% polyester Texpedloft microfiber.

The bag is equipped with a 3D anti-snag draft tube along the full length of the zipper. There is also a central snap at the head end to reduce drafts caused by your partner.

The weight is 64.2 oz (1820 g). The dimensions are 82.7 x 63 inches (210 x 160 cm), so no doubt you have plenty of space for two users. The packed size is very impressive, it measures (L x D) 11.8 x 7.1 inches (30 x 18 cm), but note that they do not include a compression sack. To reduce it to such a size you will have to buy one. This bag is included also in my list of best lightweight synthetic sleeping bags.

What I like:

  • Versatility.
  • Comfort.
  • Great packed size.

What I dislike:

  • Not for cold weather.
  • No compression sack.

2. Big Agnes Sentinel 30 Sleeping Bag

Big Agnes Sentinel 30 Sleeping Bag.
Big Agnes Sentinel 30 Sleeping Bag.

I would start here with some numbers, so the weight is 3 lb 8 oz (1.59 kg), and the bag’s compressed size is incredible 8 x 6 inches (20 x 15 cm). Now when you know these parameters, let’s see what behind them is.

The picture above shows that this is a hooded mix of a rectangular and mummy-style sleeping bag but designed for two users. If it looks incredibly cozy and comfortable, then you should know this is indeed so.

You have a lightweight and very compressible 650 fill DownTek insulation. It is treated, so it is water-resistant. They use their own technology for water repellency and anti-microbial and anti-bacterial protection. It is bluesign certified PFOA and PFOS free water repellant chemistry. The official temperature rating is 30 F (-1 C). If you add here a few degrees just to be certain, you realize that this is still a great 3-season option.

The fabric is a polyester rip-stop with a water repellent treatment, and the liner is a polyester taffeta. They apply a quilted construction to eliminate cold spots.

You have a Flex Pad Sleeve on the bottom where you can put sleeping pads of various sizes. The bottom of the bag itself is only lightly insulated. There are draft tubes located along the length of the dual anti-snag zippers. You also have a draft collar to preserve the heat. They use top-quality #5 YKK anti-snag zippers.

What I like:

  • Quality materials.
  • Incredible comfort.
  • Great packed size.
  • Great weight.

What I dislike:

  • Price.

3. NEMO Tango Duo Slim 30 Sleeping Bag

NEMO Tango Duo Slim 30 sleeping bag.
NEMO Tango Duo Slim 30 sleeping bag.

This NEMO Tango Duo is truly ultralight with its 2 lb 10 oz (1.19 kg) of weight. There are several reasons for this, you have a unique design here. So this is a sort of hybrid between a backcountry quilt and a rectangular bag.

On the other hand, the shell fabric is a very thin but strong 20-denier ripstop nylon shell, while the liner is 30-denier nylon taffeta. These are durable water repellent (DWR) materials. But see also the fill, you have a 650-fill-power RDS-certified down. Note that this is a hydrophobic treated down.

Yet another reason for such a weight is its backless design. So you use a sleeping pad instead and place it in the sleeve. Pity they built it so that you can only place two solo size pads in the sleeves. You have a Blanket Fold external draft collar that provides tucked-in comfort. Note also that the bag is slightly tapered for increased thermal efficiency. So with all this, you have a pad with an official temperature rating of 30 F (-1 C).

It comes with an included compression stuff sack. The bag fits users up to 72 inches (183 cm). Shoulder girth is 70 inches (178 cm). The packed size is around 15 x 8 inches (38 x 20 cm). This bag is also in my list of best rated Nemo sleeping bags.

What I like:

  • Comfort.
  • Great packed size.
  • Down fill.
  • Weight.

What I dislike:

  • Works only with single-size pads.

4. Therm-a-Rest Vela 2-Person 32-Degree Quilt

Therm-a-Rest Vela 2-Person 32-Degree Quilt.
Therm-a-Rest Vela 2-Person 32-Degree Quilt.

As you realize from the name, strictly speaking here you do not have a sleeping bag but a quilt. However, it is constructed for two people, and it has a fully enclosed sewn-in foot box. It is ultra-packable and ultra-lightweight, so see the numbers. The packed size (L x D) is 14 x 8 inches (36 x 20 cm), and the weight is incredible 2 lb 4 oz (1.06 kg).

These great features are due to its quality insulation, so you have a 650 Nikwax hydrophobic down, treated to absorb 90% less water and to dry 3 times faster than un untreated down. For increased thermal efficiency they have added reflective lining tapes along the seams, to prevent the body heat from escaping.

So the official rating is 32 F (0 C), and this would make it a true 3-season outdoor sleeping item. I would always test it before going on the trail. But note that this product has already been around for several years already, so all is known about it and you know what you are buying.

The quilt is designed to fit users up to 78 inches (198 cm). You have the following numbers for the girth (shoulder/hip/footbox): 82/82/100 inches (208/208/254 cm). The shell fabric is a 20D polyester ripstop with DWR and the liner is a 20D polyester.

What I like:

  • Top-quality materials.
  • Great size.
  • Great packed size.
  • Incredible weight.

What I dislike:

  • Price.

Final thoughts

So I hope you have enjoyed reading this list with the best double backpacking sleeping bags for 2 people. Note that it will be updated from time to time whenever I find a double-wide sleeping bag that fits in this collection. This is why you might want to bookmark this text and visit it again.

These are all very light and compact bags, but there are differences of course. All are suitable for 3-season use, but I do not think that they are all equally warm. So if you expect cold nights on the trail, you should choose a model that offers more protection. This includes a hood, a better rating, and options to prevent cold drafts.

There are both synthetic and down insulations here. The former is generally better suited for wet conditions, but the down in these bags is treated so I would not expect much difference in this sense.

Editor’s Choice Bag

The sleeping bag below is not the lightest in the list, but I am convinced that a few ounces more is worth carrying in view of its features and protection.
