Best 4 Person Car Camping Tents

Here you have my selection of the best 4 person car camping tents in a variety of styles and sizes from small and portable to huge multi-room camping castless.

This is about quality and also about versatility and not a popularity context. By this, I mean the following. It was easy to populate this list with the tunnel-type tents alone, or with cabin tents, it with dome tents. But I wanted to give some great examples of all basic types.

Also, there are manufacturers who have many excellent tents, and it was easy to make this list with the tents of one brand alone, take Coleman, Vango, or several others as examples. But I did my best to show a few top brands in this industry.

The same holds with materials. I am convinced that nothing can match canvas tents or polycotton tents, they are perfect for almost any weather and climate. So you have some examples here, but I have included synthetic tents as well.

For car camping, you want a comfortable tent, so the larger the better. There are indeed a few giant tents here, and it was easy to make the list with such large tents only. But the area was not my only criterion. I also include some examples of tents that are relatively easy to use and compact for transportation.

It is impossible to make a short list and claim with certainty that these are the best tents out there. This is my preference based on the principles I just described above. It is about versatility in every possible sense, so I try to include something for everybody’s taste and need. There are many more tents that deserve to be here, but this is a relatively short list so I have to prioritize.

My list of top rated 4 person car camping tents

The tents in the list are ordered by the floored area from smaller to larger. This doesn’t include an eventual vestibule or porch if the tent has it. So read about features and do not rely only on the order in the list.

If you are new to this, then it is important to stress that here you have some of the best-known brands in the outdoor industry.

I hope you will love the products I present below, I choose only the best that is on the market, those that I can fully recommend, and present them here in the site. Just a heads up that as an associate of Amazon and other sellers, I may earn some commission from qualifying purchases of products bought via links on this page, at no additional cost for you.

1. Coleman Instant 4 Person Camping Tent

Coleman Instant 4 Person Camping Tent.
Coleman Instant 4 Person Camping Tent.

This tent is certainly not here in the list because of its large area. In fact, the area is very small, you have only 56 ft² (5.2 m²). The dimensions are such that you can perhaps squeeze four pads on the floor, the base measures 8 x 7 ft (2.44 x 2.13 m).

But the tent is here because of its simplicity and ease of use. As you realize from the picture, this is a very typical cabin-type tent, but this is also an instant tent with an express setup in under 1 minute. So this is for people who change the camping space frequently and do not want to deal with poles all the time. You have the frame pre-attached to the tent so you just unfold and extend its poles and the tent is ready.

The tent is a single-layer type, this is yet another feature behind its simplicity. The fly is integrated into the structure. But they sell a partial cover fly that you can order separately.

The tent has been on the market for years already, tried and tested by many before you, so you know what you are buying. On Amazon alone, the number of reports by users is in the big 4-figures. You also have one of the best-known brands behind this tent.

The tent is fully freestanding and with double-layer windows on all sides. Here are a few more numbers:

  • Weight: 9.8 lb (4.45 kg).
  • Peak height: 59 in (1.5 m).
  • Packed size: 38 x 18 x 9.5 in (97 x 46 x 24 cm).

What I like:

  • Lightweight.
  • Ease of use.
  • Instant setup.
  • Incredible price.

What I dislike:

  • Small area.

2. KLYMIT Cross Canyon 4 Person Tent

KLYMIT Cross Canyon 4 Person Tent.
KLYMIT Cross Canyon 4 Person Tent.

I have decided to show at least one typical dome-style tent. This type of tents is for places where you need extra protection from the elements and if you camp in windy conditions. So comfort may be limited but you have protection and lots of storage space.

So this Klymit Cross Canyon 4 tent should be a great representative for such a purpose. Note that this is the largest in their new series of three tents that also includes Cross Canyon 2, and Cross Canyon 3 tents.

This is a dome configuration but the poles are pre-bent and this adds extra shoulder space inside. You have a full coverage fly that creates 2 vestibules. This tent is quite tall for a dome tent but it is aerodynamic. The peak height is 65 inches (165 cm).

You have quality materials here. The mesh canopy is a 40D polyester, and the fly is a 68D polyester taffeta with a polyurethane coating that gives it an 1800 mm waterproof rating. The floor is a bathtub-style 75D polyester and it has a 3000 mm PU coating. The poles are aluminum.

Here are some numbers:

  • The weight: 10.7 lb (4.9 kg).
  • Dimensions: 100 x 86 in (254 x 218 cm).
  • Inner area: 59 ft² (5.54 m²).
  • Vedstibules area: 30 ft² (2.8 m²).
  • Packed size (L x D): 20 x 9.5 in (51 x 24 cm).

What I like:

  • Useful vestibules for storage.
  • Compact.
  • Lightweight.
  • Reasonable price for such a quality tent.

What I dislike:

  • Small area.

3. Gazelle 22272 T4 Pop-up Portable Camping Hub Tent

Gazelle 22272 T4 Pop-up Portable Camping Hub Tent.
Gazelle 22272 T4 Pop-up Portable Camping Hub Tent.

This tent is here because of its unique design and its ease of use. It is one of the instant tents, you have a patent-pending design, and its official setup time is 90 seconds.

The frame is preattached and this is a pop-up freestanding construction. It could be described as a sort of a cabin-type tent, and it is tall with its 78 inches (198 cm) peak height. The walls are almost vertical, so the tent offers lots of volume.

You have 6 windows and 2 uniquely shaped doors. All these openings are double-layer structures with mesh and with panels. The floor is removable.

The poles are fiberglass. The rain fly and the wall material is a very durable 210D Oxford Weave shell, and its waterproof rating is 2000 mm. The floor is also polyester 300D Oxford Weave and its waterproof rating is 5000 mm. They claim that you have a UV50+ rating for the fabric. All zippers are top-quality YKK. Note that the tent is heavy, the weight is 30 lb (13.6 kg), and the area is 61.4 ft² (5.7 m²).

What I like:

  • Unique design.
  • Ease of use.
  • Tall tent.
  • Great windows.

What I dislike:

  • Small area.
  • Fiberglass poles.
  • Heavy.

4. Coleman 4 Person Cabin Camping Tent with Screen Room

Coleman 4 Person Cabin Camping Tent with Screen Room
Coleman 4 Person Cabin Camping Tent with Screen Room.

This tent is everything but a cabin, however, the word Cabin in the title is the official part of its name. In fact, this is a nicely built tunnel tent. They have it in two different versions related to the design of its screen room. In one of them, shown in the picture, the screne room is fully protected under the fly. So this makes it a pleasant 2-room structure.

The tent offers three panoramic windows and one large door, you also have an e-cable port. The inner area is around 64 ft² (6 m²) but the total area with the screen room is around 88 ft² (8.2 m²), plus some space under the vestibule. The tent weighs 23 lb (10.4 kg). The peak height is 6 ft (183 cm), and the packed size (L x D) is very good 26 x 10.5 inches (66 x 27 cm).

There are 4 poles and this is fiberglass. The fabric is their WeatherTec polyester with inverted seams as in all their tents. The floor seems to be polyethylene.

What I like:

  • Compact.
  • 2 Rooms plus vestibule.
  • Tall tent.
  • Very affordable.

What I dislike:

  • Heavy.

5. Nemo Wagontop 4p Tent

Nemo Wagontop 4p Tent.
Nemo Wagontop 4p Tent.

This Wagontop 4 person tent is the smallest of the series of three tents that includes also Wagontop 6P and Wagontop 8P. This is just to know if you need a larger option, they all share almost the same features.

So this is a freestanding and pleasant tent with a unique design. You have poles that are Y-shaped on both ends, and when they are in the ground grommets, the structure becomes self-supporting. It can be described as a tunnel-type tent but you have straight leg poles just like in a cabin tent. So you have lots of headspace and volume inside.

The tent has one door and a removable vestibule visible in the picture. You also have large panoramic windows on the sides. The mentioned poles are thick with a 14.5 mm diameter and this is aluminum. The fabric is a 75D polyester with a 1500 waterproof rating. The floor material is a 300D polyester with the same waterproof rating.

The weight is 20 lb 1 oz (9.1 kg) so it is on the heavy side. But the area and volume are very good. The floor space is 69.4 ft² (6.45 m²) and you also have 26.9 ft² (2.5 m²) under the vestibule. The packed size (L x D) is 27 x 10 inches (69 x 25 cm). This tent is also in my list of best Nemo tents for camping.

What I like:

  • Top-quality materials.
  • Nice vestibule.
  • Tall and pleasant.
  • Great lifetime warranty.

What I dislike:

  • The price.
  • Single-layer design.

6. Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow 4 Person Canvas Tent

Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow 4 Person Canvas Tent.
Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow 4 Person Canvas Tent.

A list of this type cannot be without Kodiak Canvas tents, so this Flex-Bow 4-Person is one of the smallest they have. There are several larger versions, just to know if you feel you need a larger tent.

This tent has been on the market for years, so all is known about it. It is built from a pleasant breathable cotton fabric. But this makes it heavy so the weight of this tent is 54.5 lb (24.7 kg). The roof is a 10 oz Hydra-shield canvas and the walls are 8.5 oz Hydra-Shield canvas.

The floor is synthetic 13.5 oz vinyl reinforced with polyester, and with welded seams. The frame is impressive. You have 1-inch galvanized steel tubing for the two legs poles and flex-bow rods, 3/8-inch, solid, spring steel is on the roof.

The tent could be described as a sort of a cabin-type structure, you have 2 large D-shaped doors and 4 large windows with no-see-um mesh and panels. As you realize from the picture, you have a front awning (70 x 57 inches) that provides covered entry and shade.

The dimensions are 9 x 8 ft (274 x 244 cm) and the floor area is 72 ft² (6.69 m²). The peak height is 6’1″ (185 cm) and the packed size is 35.5 x 12.5 x 11.5 inches (90 x 32 x 29 cm).

  • A bit small floor area.

7. Outwell Chatham 4 Person Air Tent

Outwell Chatham 4 Person Air Tent.
Outwell Chatham 4 Person Air Tent.

Outwell is one of the brands that could populate this list alone. So this Chatam 4 person tent is one of their great representatives. This is a huge 3-room structure, plus a large porch. The front porch is practically a floorless room, it is completely enclosed and you have solid windows and a door that can be closed.

So let’s see the dimensions first. The inner floor area is 131.3 ft² (12.2 m²) and the porch adds around 65 ft² (6 m²). So the total protected area is around 196 ft² (18 m²).

This is also a specific tent with inflatable air beams instead of solid poles. There is much more here. The sleeping rooms are with a darkened material to reduce glare, and you also have solid tinted windows and large doors. The front door is a 2-layer type with mesh and with a panel and it is 94.5 inches (2.4 meters) wide. There is also a side door.

The tent is high with its 82.68 inches (210 cm) peak height, and the structure is clearly a tunnel-shape as you realize from the picture. The shell is what they call the Outtex 4000 Select, a 70D durable polyester with a 4000 mm waterproof rating. On the floor, you have a double-coated polyethylene with a 10000 mm rating. The inner tent is built from breathable polyester.

The weight is 47 lb (21.3 kg) and its overall dimensions are 20.83 x 10.17 ft (635 x 310 cm). The packed size is 35 x 19 x 19 inches (88 x 49 x 49 cm).

But this is not only about the floor size and organization. This is also a very tall tent with 84.6 inches (215 cm) peak height. See also its impressive materials. You have DAC poles and this is aluminum 7001 series with diameters 14.5, 9, and 8 mm.

The shell fabric is durable 100% polyester 70D 185T with a polyurethane coating that gives it a 3000 mm rating. The inner tents are also durable and breathable 100% polyester 68D. 9. Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent

Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent.
Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent.

This Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent is not for everybody because of its price, its size, and its weight. But this is an incredible construction that deserves to be here. It is of quality that is hard if not impossible to match.

The tent is built from a military-grade canvas, so this is a heavy-duty, rip-stop canvas 650 g/m², incredibly robust and long-lasting. It is impregnated during the production and it is also fire-retardant to all international and USA standards (CPAI 84). It blocks UV rays to reduce color fading (4 on the blue wool scale), and the manufacturer claims that the fabric shows no noticeable color fading for 15+ years. They give a 3-year warranty on all parts.

The frame is premium-grade powder-coated steel and the tent is fully freestanding and self-supporting. The zippers are also the best #10 YKK. You also have unbendable pegs, zinc-coated D-rings, and brass eyelets.

  • The packed size.
  • The price.

Final thoughts

So this was my list of best 4 person camping tents and I hope you realize how impressive these tents really are. But indeed they are all very different, so here are a few tips that might help in deciding what to choose.

Materials

Regarding fabric, you have both canvas and synthetic tents here. Canvas is always the best and it works great in all seasons and climate, it is breathable and pleasant, it gives a bit of insulation, and it creates a cool atmosphere in the tent. But it is heavy and it needs more care in keeping it stored.

Regarding poles/support, you have all materials represented here. This means fiberglass, aluminum, steel, and inflatable beams. Air beams are great because they can never break, but they can leek, though this technology has improved in recent years and they are reliable. Fiberglass is inexpensive but not very durable. Aluminum is always a great option, but some heavy tents need strong steel legs poles.

Area

You have a huge diversity here. The difference between the largest and the smallest tents is by a factor of 4 or so. But note that some of the smallest tents have vestibules and this is a useful storage area for gear.

The largest tents here are organized in separate rooms, so this may be convenient for families with kids and for groups of couples. On the other hand, smaller tents in the list can be very easy to use and to transport. Some people do not need really large tents, this is why I have included some smaller options here.

Price

Some of the tents here are really affordable, and the price was one of the reasons for having them in the list. But you also have very expensive camping castles here. The differences in prices can be 10 times or so.

Editor’s choice

With so many different tents in the list, it is not easy to choose one and put it forward. But if I have to choose one, my favorite would be the tent presented below.
